General Overview

Folic Acid is a B vitamin which contributes to normal maternal tissue growth during pregnancy. Adequate folic acid intake is needed during the pre-conception period, the time right before and just after a woman becomes pregnant.

Evergreen Folic Acid helps protect against a number of congenital malformations, including neural tube defects (which are the most notable birth defects that occur from folic acid deficiency). The risk of neural tube defects is significantly reduced when supplemental folic acid is consumed in addition to a healthy diet prior to and during the first month following conception. Supplementation with folic acid has also been shown to reduce the risk of congenital heart defects, cleft lips, limb defects, and urinary tract anomalies. Folic acid deficiency during pregnancy may also increase the risk of preterm delivery, infant low birth weight, fetal growth retardation, spontaneous abortion and pregnancy complications.
Therefore, it is recommended that women who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant take 800 microgram folic acid daily.

Do NOT overload your system with 5mg Folic acid!

The RDA (recommended daily allowance) for pregnant women is 600-800 micrograms and the UL (tolerable upper intake levels, which is the highest level of intake known to avoid toxicity) is 1000 microgram or 1 milligram [1].

Q. What is folic acid?

Folic acid is a vitamin. It helps the body make new cells. “Folic acid” and “folate” mean the same thing. Folic acid is a man-made form of folate. Folate is formed naturally in some foods. Most women do not get all the folic acid they need through food alone.

Q. Who needs folic acid?

All people need folic acid. But folic acid is particularly important for women who are able to get pregnant. When a woman has enough folic acid in her body before and during pregnancy, it can prevent major birth defects, including

  • Spina bifida: This occurs when an unborn baby’s spinal cord column does not close to protect the spinal cord. As a result, the nerves that control leg movements and other functions will not work.
  • Anencephaly: This is when most or all of the brain does not develop. Babies with this problem die before or shortly after birth.

Q. How much folic acid do women need?

Women able to get pregnant need 800 micrograms of folic acid every day, even if they are not planning to get pregnant. That way, even if they do become pregnant, their babies will be less likely to have birth defects. Talk to your doctor about how much folic acid you need if:

  • You had a baby with a birth defect of the brain or spinal cord and want to get pregnant again.
  • You have a family member with spina bifida.
  • You have spina bifida and want to get pregnant.

Q. I am taking Evergreen formular for women, should I still take EVERGREEN Folic Acid?

Q. I am now pregnant, should I continue with EVERGREEN Folic acid?

You can continue with your EVERGREEN Folic acid but it is advisable you switch to EVERGREEN Natal Care which in addition to Folic acid contains other nutrients you and your unborn baby require for normal healthy development.
